Rice Straw Market in Japan

Approximately 950,000 metric tons of rice straw is consumed as beef cattle feed in Japan each year, of which roughly 25 percent is imported. Japan’s biosecurity regulations restrict rice straw imports and China is currently the only eligible supplier, but Japanese forage importers are seeking rice straw imports from other countries. Phytosanitary requirements for U.S. rice straw must be established before it is eligible for import into Japan.
